Best Oily Skin Treatments

Oily skin and hair is characterized by an oily sheen on the skin or hair. This happens because of the excessive oil production by the sebaceous glands, causing the pores to enlarge. Dust and bacteria collected in these enlarged pores become the cause of various acnes, such as blackhead, whiteheads and pimples. Most people find it difficult to deal with this skin type, as it tends to get shiny, sticky and dull, sometimes even within minutes of washing. What can be the other reasons for an oily skin? Hormonal changes, certain hormones control the production of oil by glands in the skin. If these hormones are higher relatively than normal, then your changes of having a greasy skin is higher. The excess production of oil in a person’s skin or hair is further aggravated with certain foods, and weather changes.

The amount of oil in a person’s hair and skin varies, depending on: · time of year · sun and wind · temperature and humidity. Skin looks the oiliest in hot, humid weather. Sometimes oily skin treatments are not necessary for teenagers as the condition is often part of puberty and goes away when the person becomes an adult and hormone levels change. However the recommended oily skin treatments and for hair include the following: · shampooing hair daily · avoiding vigorous or frequent hair brushing · wash the face several times a day with a mild soap and water, then pat dry with a towel · use premoistened disposable cleansing pads to wipe excess oil from the face when away from home · consider using absorbent disposable paper that soaks up excess oil · avoid oil-based makeup whenever possible such as creams · wear only water-based, noncomedogenic makeup which doesn’t block pores · remove all makeup before going to bed.

The best treatment however seems to be the prevention that includes daily shampoos and frequent facial cleansing. Birth control pills, or oral contraceptives, may be helpful for some women in reducing the amount of oil produced. However, Oral contraceptives may have certain side effects such as, nausea, stomach cramps, etc. It is also important for you to continue the treatment until the problem is completely cured. If an effective treatment is stopped without completing may cause the symptoms to return. Adolescents may outgrow, the condition and the treatment can be stopped at any time. You must monitor your skin and hair, to assess whether your treatment is working or not, you can go to your consulting doctor to have it assessed by him. Any new or worsening symptoms should be reported to your doctor to check the allergens.

Since oily skin tends to attract more dirt than dry skin, you must wash your face several times a day with a light, non-greasy liquid cleansing soap /face wash and warm water. Use of toners and astringents containing alcohol to help you tone your skin and close the pores. It’s essential that you use water-based moisturizers and make-up and use powder to minimize the shine. There are a lot of shine control cosmetics available in the market, which can be bought over the counter. If your problem is severe it better to seek your doctor advice before applying any lotions, as it may have chemicals that may react adversely with your skin. Close to oily skin is the combination skin, which is oily on the T zone, the area that stretches across the forehead and down the nose and chin. Products that contain alpha hydroxy acids and vitamin A retinols can help balance combination skin. You can use oil-absorbing makeup to reduce shine too.
